About South House’s Volunteer Program
South House is a volunteer driven organization. The centre would not exist without the time, energy, enthusiasm, creativity and dedication of the volunteers. At the same time, the centre is a space for volunteers to express themselves, to think critically about their beliefs and society, to learn and develop skills. The centre should provide volunteers with the resources and support needed to do this.
The relationship between volunteers and the centre as an organization is a reciprocal one. The centre will support and facilitate the efforts of the volunteers, and in turn, the volunteers are charged with maintaining and promoting the mandate and mission statement of the centre. This relationship allows volunteers a considerable amount of freedom in organizing events and in shaping the centre’s community. As a volunteer, the centre and its staff will help you realize your plans and goals for the community.
Our volunteer program is operating remotely as our physical space is temporarily closed due to Covid-19.
What are the steps to becoming a volunteer?
If you’d like to become a volunteer, please fill out the application below! If you have any questions about the application or would like to submit it in a different format (i.e. voice recording, video, etc), please contact outreach@southhousehalifax.ca.
Once you have submitted your application, a staff member will review it and contact you via email.
A staff member will set up a virtual or phone meeting with you to talk about the area(s) of work you are interested in. If you already have a specific idea in mind, they will discuss the ways the centre can support your idea and bring it to life. If you don’t have anything specific in mind, they can suggest some ideas based on the area of work you are interested in. Either way, we would love to chat with you to see how we can work together!
Together, you and a staff member will develop a plan to carry out your volunteer activity.
